Attractions

There are a variety of different attractions within easy reach of Nuevo Portil to satisfy both young and old visitors.

Follow in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus around the city of Huelva and visit the museum and replica boats at the Wharf in Palos de la Frontera.   For garden lovers, adjoining the Wharf are the botanical gardens of Jose Celestino Mutis.

Visit the remarkable town of El Rocio, situated on the edge of the Doñana National Park with its sand covered streets and houses with verandas.  The town resembles a set from a wild west film and is the venue for the famous Whitsun Romeria festival.  For bird lovers take a public tour or book a private tour into the Park departing from El Rocio.

Doñana National Park

It covers 50,000ha of protected wetlands, pine forests and shifting coastal dunes. The various wetland habitats attract birds in huge numbers, more than 250 species have been recorded in the past.

At the Wharf of the Caravels you will find the Christopher Columbus museum and replicas of the boats for his first voyage to the Americas, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María.

The Museum of Huelva

Situated on Alameda Sundheim, one of the city's most beautiful streets, the ground floor consists of sections of archaeology and mining while the upper floor houses a fine art collection.

Rio Tinto Mines

The sheer scale of the open cast copper mines in this area are a spectacle not to be missed. Arrive early to take advantage of the museum and take the 22km round trip in a restored train.
